Dear Entrepreneur,

Be insightful when building a team to execute your strategies.

Build a ‘chess’ team, and not a ‘checkers’ team. Think about the difference for a moment. In checkers, all the pieces are basically the same, and that’s a poor model for a team.

On the other hand, in chess, each piece has a unique role, unique limitations, and unique abilities. That’s how a team should be.

Your team should consist of individuals with unique abilities—each playing different roles—understanding their limitations, and understanding that they are one piece of something bigger than themselves. Great entrepreneurs are great chess masters.

They recognize what’s unique about each teammate—they know their strengths, their weaknesses, their dislikes, and their likes, and they use that insight to bring out the very best from each team member.

With love,
Chidi
